Project: Trunk Road Safety Improvements; HE Area 3
Client: Kier Highways Ltd
Role: Arena Associates provided services at the Penrith office of Kier Design Services to augment the resources for this project. The project consisted of analysing collision data and developing appropriate concept designs for engineering interventions to reduce the likelihood of a re-occurrence.
The work concentrated on the A31 which feeds traffic to the south coast in the Poole / Bournemouth area from the M27 and on towards Dorset and the south-west. Consequently a high proportion of the traffic is generated by holidaymakers. Collision data at major junctions and along specific sections was analysed showing many instances of shunts and loss of control crashes. Traffic control and management figured highly in the measures devised to reduce the number of future collisions.
